Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have desktop at home and also a laptop.  Do I need to buy a separate license of OrchidWiz Encyclopedia for each?
A: OrchidWiz Encyclopedia can be run on a maximum of two computers per named user.  This gives you the flexibility to run the program on the computer at your main location (home or work) as well as on a mobile computer such as a laptop.  Installation of the software requires activation (click here for an explanation of activations).  OrchidWiz Express, however, can only be installed in one computer.

Q: How often will you be releasing OrchidWiz Encyclopedia updates?
A: OrchidWiz releases updates for the Encyclopedia every three months, in March, June (Upgrade), September and December.

Q: Will you be releasing updates for the OrchidWiz Express version?
A: The Express version can be "upgraded" once a year to a new version, which installs like a brand new program except it replaces the prior version.  It is currently planned for existing users to be able to upgrade to the new version for a $20 discount from retail price.  For example, if OrchidWiz Express 2013 is priced at $95, users will be able to upgrade from Express 2012 to Express 2013 for $75 (that is $95 - $20 discount).  Users will be able to skip annual upgrades, for example upgrade from Express 2012 directly to Express 2014.

Q: How much do the Encyclopedia updates cost?
A: Updates can be purchased as four consecutive quarterly installments as part of the Annual Maintenance Plan for $90 + Shipping & Handling.  This price is subject to change.  The Annual Maintenance Plan also includes upgrades as they become available (typically in June).  Upgrades contain new functionality, new types of data and new images.

Q: When can I purchase the Annual Maintenance Plan?
A: Since May of 2011, OrchidWiz, LLC started including one Annual Maintenance Plan with every new license of OrchidWiz Encyclopedia, except with software donated to societies (unless otherwise stated).  When you purchase OrchidWiz Encyclopedia, you receive the initial software, PLUS three additional quarterly updates.  Once the updates expire, the user can renew the Annual Plan for another four quarterly updates.

Q: May I skip updates?
A: Yes you may.  Subsequent updates will include all skipped data.

Q: What do updates include?
A: Updates (released quarterly in September, December and March) includes new orchid registrations and bug fixes.  It does not include upgrades.  Upgrades, released in place of the June quarterly update, contain new awards, new functionality, new types of data and new images, in addition to new registrations.

Q: Do you do online updates?
A: Currently OrchidWiz does updates only via CD.  We plan to do updates online at some point in the future.  However, we will do updates online only when we develop a way do to so which is accurate, secure and hassle-free.

Q: Do you license your software to orchid judging centers?
A: Yes we do.  Fifteen American Orchid Society judging centers have licensed our software to date.  Under this licensing exception, multiple users are allowed to use the same software license, provided the software is installed only in a maximum of two computers either owned by, or always available to the judging center.

Q: Can an orchid club or society license the software?
A: Yes, under the same conditions as a judging center (see above).

Q: How did you get your data?
A: The data contained in OrchidWiz came from dozens of sources.  In some cases, multiple sources of the same data were used and cross referenced to ensure accuracy.

Q: Does OrchidWiz have the right to use the data?
A: OrchidWiz uses only data which it has the right to use under U.S. copyright law which states facts and lists of facts are not protected by copyright.  Specifically, we are guided by the US Supreme Court case "Feist Publications vs. Rural Telephone".

Q: Can I use OrchidWiz Encyclopedia in place of the American Orchid Society Awards Quarterly publication?
A: OrchidWiz Encyclopedia does NOT replace the Awards Quarterly.  Rather, it facilitates searches and analyses of award data.  At the judging table, OrchidWiz Encyclopedia should be used in conjunction with the AQ and other AOS publications, not as a replacement.

Q: Does OrchidWiz contain photos of AOS-awarded flowers?
A: OrchidWiz contains a number of such photos where the photographer who took them gave us permission to publish.  We treat copyright law very seriously.  If you become aware of a photo in OrchidWiz which you believe does not belong to the photographer credited, please contact us immediately so we can take corrective measures.

Q: May I use the images in OrchidWiz for my own purposes?
A: You may not use any image for commercial purposes.  Also, you may not publish the images on the web or in a print publication without specific permission from OrchidWiz.  You may, however, use the images in discrete ways such as student papers, educational lectures, etc., provided you credit OrchidWiz.  In addition, every image referencing an OrchidWiz contributor with "Photography of" must be credited to that contributor (the person who owns the copyright) rather than OrchidWiz.

Q: May I contribute my own photos to the OrchidWiz Encyclopedia?
A: Yes you may.  We would be delighted to have your photos.  You may submit them in any format.  It is best if you burn them onto a CD or DVD and mail it to OrchidWiz, 145 NE 95th Street, Miami Shores, FL 33138.  You may also email your digital photos to the address noted on the front page of this web site.  We require that you sign a disclaimer certifying the copyright belongs to you and you are giving OrchidWiz permission for a permanent display.  OrchidWiz reserves the right to select photos for publication.

Q: If I contribute photos, will you credit me?
A: Yes, every digital photo is credited to the owner.  Also, OrchidWiz will shrink all photos to a low resolution (maximum 640 x 640 pixels) before including them in a release.  OrchidWiz includes photos for identification and analytical purposes only.  OrchidWiz does not publish photos for artistic or aesthetic value.  We do not compete with professional photographers.

Q: How can I view the status of my order?
A: Go to the Customer Service, Account Information page. This page lists all your orders. Click the date of the order whose status you wish to view.

Q: What are your shipping costs?
